![]() ![]() When the Colonies, not yet the United States, and England were negotiating the end of the Revolution in Paris, which became The Treaty of Paris, John Adams, lead negotiator for the winning colonies, said that the Northwest territories also belonged to the winner of the war. It was territory controlled by England following the French and Indian Wars. For reasons I hope to illuminate in this review, I am extremely glad that I chose to read "The Pioneers."Īlthough most Americans do not realize it, the huge territory, virtually 20% of the continental United States, was not part of the Louisiana Purchase. I chose to read his history entitled "The Pioneers" because it covered a part of American history about which I felt deficient, the establishment and settlement of the Northwest Territory that totally encompasses the states of Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. ![]() David McCullough is the dean of American historians with such noteworthy works, as "1776," "The Great Bridge", and "The Johnstown Flood." He is equally regarded as a biographer with top of the line biographies of John Adams and Harry S. ![]()
